About the instructor:

Jonathan Rogerson is a jazz guitarist and composer whose lyrical playing and deep musicality reflect a lifelong devotion to the art of storytelling through sound. A Washington, DC native now based in Nashville, TN, Jonathan’s career spans an extraordinary range of genres and performance settings.

He has shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Gary Thomas, Tim Green, Warren Wolf, Joshua Davis, Greg Bryant, and Marcus Finnie, bringing his distinctive voice to both traditional and contemporary jazz contexts. Beyond the bandstand, Jonathan has been a key figure in several free improvisation collectives, exploring the boundaries of group interaction and spontaneous composition.

Jonathan’s versatility as a guitarist extends far beyond jazz. His collaborations include work with singer-songwriters, pop artists, and orchestral and chamber ensembles highlighted by performances with the National Symphony Orchestra.

As an educator, Jonathan has spent more than two decades teaching private students, guiding players toward a deeper understanding of music and creativity. From 2012 to 2016, he authored the (intentionally) verbose and highly nerdy blog PostModernGuitarist, where he unpacked 20th and 21st century musical concepts and their practical applications for guitarists. The blog later inspired a series of octave displacement exercise books that continue to circulate among advanced players.

Thoughtful, emotive, and grounded in years of experience, Jonathan approaches every project as a chance to connect, explore, and tell stories through music. His time in Nashville continues to fuel his passion for collaboration across styles and mediums.
