This intermediate to advanced ensemble is open to all instrumentalists. Students will cover more advanced concepts of literature, including intros, endings, styles, tempos and comping.

About the instructor:

Jonathan A. Wires is a jazz performer, composer, and educator. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University ofMemphis and a master’s degree in jazz studies from Middle Tennessee State University. Jonathan has been recorded on 40+ records ranging from rock, jazz, free improvisation, folk, to classically influenced music. In 2016 Jonathan recorded his first recording, “Weaving” as a leader which featured Grammy winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin.

He has performed or recorded with a variety of artists including Dave Douglas, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Frank Lowe, Billy Bang, Alvin Fielder, Michael Jefry Stevens, Cassandra Wilson, Steve Davis, Calvin Newborn, Leon Anderson, Joel Weiskopf, Chester Thompson, Don Aliquo, Alex Graham, Matt White, and the Nashville Jazz Composer’s Collective, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

In 2022, Jonathan contributed to Jeff Coffin’s Grammy nominated recording “Between Dreaming and Joy”. Among his other contributions are performances for the 2006 film soundtrack for "Black Snake Moan". He has also performed at a variety of festivals, including the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, the Zeitgeist Festival in New Orleans, and the Lincoln Center Summer Festival in New York City. In addition, he has been an active educator since 2011 holding positions at Tennessee State University, Nashville State Community College, and Middle State Tennessee University. He has served on staff at the Vermont Jazz Institute and the Nashville Jazz Workshop's summer jazz camp. Jonathan has had the fortune to have toured Europe in 2010 and China in 2012, 2017, and 2018.
