The award-winning Jazz Program at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music takes the stage at the Nashville Jazz Workshop for an evening showcasing the next generation of jazz artists. This special concert features three outstanding student ensembles—the Blue Note Combo, the Verve Combo, and the Academy Combo—performing a dynamic mix of classic repertoire and modern jazz.

The department of Jazz Studies at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music pursues in-depth study of North American improvisational music and how it intersects with diverse music of the world. Through excellence in scholarship, creative live performance, touring; recording sessions, and community outreach and engagement, we foster the next generation of professional musicians, creative artists and critical thinkers.

The Blue Note Combo is directed by Jeff Coffin and Ryan Middagh. Coffin is a Grammy Award–winning saxophonist best known for his longtime work with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones and as a member of the Dave Matthews Band. A dedicated educator, Coffin brings deep experience in jazz, funk, and world music to his work with students. Saxophonist and composer, Dr. Ryan Middagh, is Director of Jazz Studies at Vanderbilt University and is an active performer and arranger whose work spans jazz, classical, and contemporary styles.

The Verve Combo is led by Rob Linton, a respected Nashville-based bassist and educator with extensive experience as a performer, clinician, and recording artist. In addition to an active performing resume with world-class artists like Eric Reed and Jason Marsalis, Linton is deeply involved in shaping the jazz curriculum at Blair and mentoring young improvisers.

The Academy Combo is directed by Marc Widenhofer, a versatile musician and educator recognized for his commitment to foundational jazz training and ensemble cohesion.

Join us for an inspiring evening celebrating student artistry, exceptional mentorship, and the vibrant jazz culture at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.
