The Nashville Jazz Workshop welcomes drummer Danny Gottlieb and pianist Pat Coil to the Jazz Cave for an evening devoted to the music and the unmistakable sound of ECM — the German label that, since 1969, has given jazz some of its most spacious and searching records. The program draws on Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, Lyle Mays, Eberhard Weber, and more, with special guest Jeff Coffin on saxophone.

Gottlieb comes to this music from inside it. As the founding drummer of the Pat Metheny Group, he played on the ECM albums that defined the label’s American voice — Watercolors, Pat Metheny Group, American Garage, Offramp — and his career since has run from Gary Burton to the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Elements, the band he co-led with bassist Mark Egan.

Coil is one of Nashville’s most respected pianists and arrangers, with a résumé running from Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show band to Michael McDonald and the Manhattan Transfer, alongside decades of teaching and studio work in this city. His recent recordings include Leif Shires’ Beautiful Love, which also features Gottlieb.

Coffin brings three Grammys from his years with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and nearly two decades in the Dave Matthews Band, along with his own group, the Mu’tet.

Rounding out the band are Jacob Jezioro on bass and Beth Gottlieb on percussion.
