Donna McElroy
Community Artist
Residency at the Jazz
Cave February 10-13, 2006
Jazz vocalist and educator
Donna McElroy returned to
Nashville in February 2006
for a weekend residency
funded by a grant from the
Metro Arts Commission, Arts
Builds Communities. She
played two nights to packed
houses at the Jazz Cave
with a band consisting of
Lori Mechem, Roger
Spencer, Chris Brown,
Denis Solee, and George
Tidwell. She worked
intensively with a group of
vocal students at a Saturday
afternoon master class,
working with them on breath
control and using their
voices to maximum
potential. Sunday afternoon
was a Young People's
Concert attended by
children from all over the
city. Donna held them
spellbound, teaching about
the history and sounds of
jazz and helping them
connect jazz to the popular
music familiar to most of
them.
