NJW Programs

Snap on 2&4
  • A performance series in the Jazz Cave that usually takes place the second and fourth Fridays of each month (hence the name). Performances are by Nashville's top jazz artists, many of whom are NJW faculty. From time to time we're also able to present visiting artists, many of whom are nationally and internationally acclaimed. In special circumstances dictate, we may present a performance the first or third Friday, a 2-night series or a special Saturday performance. See below for ticket purchase and other information.
Student Performances
  • The last (6th) week of each class session is devoted to student performances in the Jazz Cave. Come out to support these hardworking students and enjoy some great jazz!

    Short sets including vocalists and ensembles typically begin at 6:00pm or 8:00pm and last 1-2 hours. All events are BYOB, BYOF
Art Shows
  • Original artwork by some of the area's best visual artists us on continuous display at the Nashville Jazz Workshop in the Jazz Cave and also in the Lobby. Installations typically last between 2 to 4 months and are preceded by a reception.
Special Events
  • As a nonprofit organization, the NJW seeks ways to elevate jazz in the community and bring jazz to more people. We do this through special outreach events. These include the popular JAZZ ON THE MOVE series, performances at community venues and neighborhood festivals, and special programs for youth. These include Young People's Concerts and the puppet presentation, Ellingtown.
Audio and Video
  • NJW makes archival audio and video recordings of performances in the Jazz Cave. For several years NJW produced a program, "Live From the Workshop," broadcast on a local public radio station, with audio recordings of these performances. NJW now broadcasts a selection of these performances as an internet radio stream, "Nashvillejazz Radio." Video clips of performance highlights are also posted on the Workshop's YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/Nashvillejazz).
Scholarships
  • The Workshop is often able to offer scholarship assistance through foundation support. Work-study programs and payment plans are also available. The Charles Dungey Memorial Scholarship is available for bassists and vocalists. General scholarships are often available through foundation grants.

Information About Events

Purchasing Tickets
  • Tickets usually go on sale the Monday before the performance. You can buy tickets by phone with a credit card, or in person at the workshop with cash, check, or credit card. We cannot take reservations without advance payment. Ticket sales are final.

    When you call for tickets, if someone is not available to take your call, please leave a voice message with your name, number, and how many tickets you'd like. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.
Seating
  • The Jazz Cave is a small room that seats 80-90. The acoustics are excellent and there are no bad seats. Seating is reserved, and consists of cafe tables for 4 (we can sometimes squeeze a 5th) or bar stools along the wall or bar. Reservations for table seating must be 2 or more. If you show up at the last minute and we're sold out, we can still sometimes fit you in if you're flexible: there's limited standing room in the back or the lobby. Table or bar stool seating often opens up for the second set.
Cave Policies
  • The Jazz Cave is a non-smoking room.

    We are a listening room, and ask that audience members keep noise and conversation to a minimum during a performance. We understand and appreciate that there some folks who enjoy music as a background for partying. However, there are plenty of other clubs where this experience is available. In the Jazz Cave the fact that audiences can hear all the nuances of an artist's performance is a major plus and inspires artists to give better performances. Cell phones, of course, must be turned off.
Start Time
  • Performances begin at 8 pm and consist of two sets. The admission covers both sets. We feel the best way to really hear jazz artists is to hear the entire evening. There may come a time when we'll have to charge for each set in order to bring in a major (read expensive) artist, but we'll only do this as a last resort.
Food and Beverages
  • We don't serve food or alcohol. Patrons can bring their own drinks and snacks. We do sell soft drinks and bottled water.
